I’d never been to Vegas before and my initial impressions are still a little befuddled. It’s an overwhelming place, The Strip. Loud, bright, glossy, like magazines (Us, People, Tiger Beat, Vogue) come to life. It’s a theater set, a cloud of decadent impermanence, a consumer cornucopia of anything you need at any time of day, anywhere you want so long as you pay, a casino for every taste, the very exemplar of immediacy, set in a valley surrounded by dry austerity, ancient rocks, an eternal desert, that can still remember being an ocean, just waiting for you to blink, let your guard down, show your hand.
